Question 62

What are the reasons annexed to the fourth commandment?

    Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death. Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a covenant forever. (ESV)
  2. Leviticus 23:3 [2]
    The Sabbath “Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work. It is a Sabbath to the LORD in all your dwelling places. (ESV)
  3. Exodus 31:17 [3]
    It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’” (ESV)

    So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. (ESV)
