Question 27

What do you understand by the providence of God?

Scripture

  1. Jeremiah 23:23–24 [1]
“Am I a God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God far away? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD. (ESV)
  2. Acts 17:24–28 [1]
The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ (ESV)
  3. Hebrews 1:3 [2]
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, (ESV)
  4. Jeremiah 5:24 [3]
They do not say in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the LORD our God, who gives the rain in its season, the autumn rain and the spring rain, and keeps for us the weeks appointed for the harvest.’ (ESV)
  5. Acts 14:15–17 [3]
“Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men, of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways. Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.” (ESV)
  6. John 9:3 [3]
Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. (ESV)
  7. Proverbs 22:2 [3]
The rich and the poor meet together; the LORD is the Maker of them all. (ESV)
  8. Proverbs 16:33 [4]
The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD. (ESV)
  9. Matthew 10:29 [5]
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. (ESV)
